2008-2009 Education & Outreach Ballet Class Application Form

Ballet San Jose has one of the most outstanding Outreach programs anywhere in the country. The experience consists of three separate offerings that reach thousands of school aged children each year. It is our fervent hope to turn some of these wonderful young people into future ballet stars. We know that nearly all of them have become ballet fans!

Ballet Class Grades 1-3
'Ballet Class’ brings small groups of students from local schools into a dance studio for a two-hour lesson taught by School Director Lise la Cour from Ballet San Jose School. Provided free of charge, Ballet Class reaches some 500 students each year. The fully interactive class, with live piano accompaniment, helps the students come to a greater understanding of the components of dance, ranging from mime and basic foot positions to musicality. At the end of the lesson, all participants receive a workbook of ballet terms, crossword puzzles, and other activities to take home with them to reinforce the material learned in class.

The First Step for Girls and Boys
The 'First Step' specifically targets children from "Ballet Class" who would like to learn more ballet. These students are offered an eighteen-week dance class designed especially for them, teaching basic ballet techniques appropriate to their age group. The entire program is free and includes shoes, dance clothes and even transportation assistance to-and-from home and the studios. Those students, who, after the semester-long class, have a continuing interest will be integrated into the Ballet Academy’s ongoing programs. The purpose is to reach children whose families may not have the financial means to afford training.

"I learned that ballet needs lots of practice and that it’s really fun."

Anna—Fifth Grade

"I learned that boys do ballet."

Jason—Second Grade

"I enjoyed it because there were parts that look easy but they were very hard."
Allen—Fifth Grade

"I love Saturday because it’s ballet day!"

Emily—Second Grade
